These days we received the news that the Government has announced the approval of the Sustainable Economy Act incorporating substantial reforms to the current model of the financial system, a clear commitment to the empowerment of renewable energy, promote social enterprise responsible, and to streamline and modernize government.
But what is sustainable economy? A word that is fashionable and that everyone uses. That development is able to meet current needs without compromising the resources and possibilities of future generations. That is, natural resources should not be used at a faster rate than regeneration; not emit pollutants at a faster rate than the natural system can absorb or neutralize. Historically it shows the inability of the human species to live in harmony with the planet. To date, no species other than humans, has managed to change so substantially in such a short time, the characteristics of our world: overcrowding, increased greenhouse, landscape modification, erosion, desertification, forest destruction, etc.., With an important interaction in water treatment, household waste, energy supply and production system.
Therefore, it is clear that it is necessary total transformation of our economic model. The current dominant economic model is one that says the economy will grow well when gross domestic product (GDP). This system does not take into account that the economic growth potential is finite, or take into account the limitations of the natural system that are taking our planet to ecological collapse. Although the Government has announced this new law, did not clarify how they will be doing. Only that which will focus on their "innovative capacity", with a big problem to solve: the high level of unemployment: 18%. Hopefully, in the end, all this does not translate just words and ideas grandicoluentes inapplicable.
Politicians must stop pulling rabbits from a hat and address, in depth, the necessary reforms including: education, research, development and innovation, transparency in the financial sector, business dynamism and decisive action to combat climate change. Reforms must be deep and progressive. Difficult task because, for a person "progressive", the term progressive means that the first thing to progress is himself. I'm afraid that the "sustainable economy" means that the first thing to sustain, even more, economically, is to always. My mother, like everyone else loves home, who perhaps knows more sustainable economy: "When it comes to little, but still want to survive, it applies this basic principle: Spend less." Perhaps elected officials (all) should take note. Miguel F.
